Escalators are lifting devices that are used to carry out work at heights as high as over 20 metres! They encompass a large variety in the choice of models due to their varied design.
Lifts are mainly used in construction, installation or finishing work at heights. They also find their role in warehouses, where they are used to facilitate and speed up tasks.
Some of the most common purposes for which platforms are used in warehouse work include:
- distribution and picking of goods,
- taking stock,
- inspections,
- racking set-up,
- carrying out maintenance, repair and installation work.
By using platforms in the storage space, we can develop the room more efficiently and also adapt to unusual customer requirements. This is ensured by a wide range of lifts with different dimensions, heights or structural systems. We need to think carefully about choosing the right platform in order to work efficiently and safely.
What elements of the mobile platform to look out for?

Despite the many types of lifts, not all will be suitable for use in warehouse work. Moving platforms in warehouses must be able to reach the right height. They should be of a suitable design to enable efficient movement between high racks. An additional and important element that is important when choosing a platform is the drive and type of tyres. They must be suitable for indoor use. Platforms should have an electric drive that is emission-free, while the tyres should be grey and non-marking.
Types of platforms used in warehouses
When working at height in a warehouse, two types of mobile platforms are most commonly used: electric mast lifts and electric scissor lifts.
For working with larger or heavier loads, the following are recommended scissor lifts. They feature a hydraulically raised platform and a platform that, compared to mast models, has a larger working platform area. This allows larger and heavier goods to be carried.
They have the added advantage of being able to work directly over the target site and a retractable balcony to extend the lateral reach.
For smaller spaces where we have limited mobility, the following will work well electric mast lifts. These platforms are characterised by their compact dimensions, which translates perfectly into their use in smaller warehouses.
They consist of an elevating mast with the capacity to pivot so that we can reach the shelving units on both sides of the storage aisle, without having to move the lift additionally. There are models with an articulated mast, giving greater lateral reach.
Questions and Answers
Does the lift tell us if the lever is overloaded?
The lift should be equipped with a sensor that indicates when the maximum lifting capacity has been exceeded.
What features to look for when choosing a platform?
When choosing a platform, consideration should be given to tyres, drive, transport dimensions and working height and lifting capacity.
What is the cheapest way to equip your warehouse with a lift?
One of the cheaper ways to equip your warehouse with mobile platforms is to rent them. The best value for money is long-term rental.
